2021 marks PressBox’s fifth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best Perseverance
In his first four seasons at Maryland, Carlos Carriere had 164 receiving yards. Total.
Despite his 6-foot-5 frame, the Georgia native was seemingly lost on the depth chart. His size alone would have made him a desirable target in the transfer portal, but he decided to stick things out.
“I think this is how I was raised,” he said in the fall. “I don’t really try to run from things.”
That commitment paid off in October, as Carriere had a career day (eight catches, 134 yards, two touchdowns) in a win against Indiana.
He remained part of the team’s receiver rotation the rest of the season, helping the Terps become bowl eligible for the first time under Michael Locksley.
