2024 marks PressBox’s eighth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best College Athletes: Laila Lawrence
We’re not sure if Coppin State head coach Jermaine Woods was trying to strike gold in the transfer portal ahead of the 2023-24 season, but that’s exactly what he did in finding Laila Lawrence out of the school now known as East Texas A&M.
Lawrence averaged 14.1 points and a MEAC-leading 10.4 rebounds per game for the Eagles. She was also third in the conference in blocks (1.2) and fifth in steals (1.7). Lawrence earned MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and first-team all-conference honors for her efforts.
Yeah, pretty good portal pickup.
