The Maryland men’s basketball team rose to No. 13 in the Associated Press top-25 poll following a win against Illinois Dec. 2, but another Big Ten test looms — this time on the road.
The Terps defeated the Illini, 71-66, to move to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten. Illinois entered the contest No. 16 in the country and now sit at No. 17. Maryland senior guard Jahmir Young hit the biggest shot of the game, a 3-pointer with 14.3 seconds remaining in regulation to put Maryland up by four and ice the game.
Young led the way for the Terps with 24 points on 9-for-20 shooting (4-for-9 from long range). Seniors Hakim Hart (17 points) and Donta Scott (12 points) joined Young as double-digit scorers, while junior guard Ian Martinez (8 points) provided a spark off the bench. Sophomore big man Julian Reese led the team in rebounds with seven.

Maryland wraps up the early portion of its Big Ten schedule with a trip to Wisconsin to play the Badgers at 9 p.m. EST on Dec. 6. Wisconsin (6-2 overall) is led by senior forward Tyler Wahl (14.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest) and sophomore guard Chucky Hepburn (12.5 points, 3.6 rebounds).
