2024 marks PressBox’s eighth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best Swim
One of the more inspiring moments of 2024 was the incredible “Bay to Baltimore” trek made by Frederick native Katie Pumphrey (Middletown) in June.
To bring attention to the efforts to make the Inner Harbor swimmable — and just days after the inaugural “Harbor Splash” swimming event — Pumphrey swam 24 miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to the Inner Harbor.
The swim took 14 hours and Pumphrey acknowledged she became emotional while swimming under what remained of the collapsed Key Bridge. She also declared the swim the “toughest thing I’ve ever done,” which is saying something for someone who swam the English Channel. Twice.
