2024 marks PressBox’s eighth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best High School Girls’ Coach
When Ayanna Jones was hired to be Hammond’s girls’ basketball coach ahead of the 2022-23 season, she was taking over a Golden Bears program that had experienced one winning season in the previous two decades.
Jones led Hammond to a 17-6 mark in her first year at the helm, then a 27-0 season and Class 2A championship in 2023-24 with the help of star guard Nia Green, now at Morgan State. The Golden Bears defeated Francis Scott Key, 65-46, in the title game.
