2024 marks PressBox’s eighth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best Pitch-In
Former Orioles lefty Cole Irvin had his moments in 2024, including a stretch of nine straight starts allowing three earned runs or fewer. But it was off the field where he made his most significant impact.
In May, Irvin became aware of the story of 83 dogs that had been rescued from a puppy mill in the city. He and his wife sprung to action, donating money to BARCS for the immediate medical care the dogs needed.
He then hosted a “Pitch-In for Pups” event at the shelter, with autographs and pictures for Orioles fans who brought items the shelter needed to be able to continue housing the animals until they were adopted.
