Ravens Legend Jamal Lewis Happy To See Mark Andrews Tie Franchise TD Record

Ravens legend Jamal Lewis has nothing but praise for Mark Andrews after the former running back’s franchise record for touchdowns was matched by the standout tight end.

Lewis played nine seasons in the NFL after being selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the fifth overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. He ran for 7,801 yards for 45 touchdowns and caught 160 passes for 1,365 yards and two touchdowns.

In a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 7, Mark Andrews broke the Ravens’ all-time receiving touchdown record after scoring a 9-yard touchdown to notch his 47th touchdown with the franchise.

“That is something you kind of hold on to forever, the history of the franchise being so young and everything,” Lewis said on Glenn Clark Radio Dec. 10. “It’s just a great thing, but it’s good to see Mark embarking on that record. Records are made to be broken.”

Andrews has become a cornerstone of the Ravens franchise, embodying what it truly means to be an athlete and professional in Baltimore. Lewis believes the contributions Andrews has made in his career have helped cement his place as a franchise legend.

“He is a scoring machine and we have a great [tradition] of tight ends that came through the Ravens in Shannon Sharpe and Todd Heap and now Mark Andrews,” Lewis said. “He is just the prime definition of what a Raven is and how you should be in the community, how you should play in the field and everything else.”

Andrews has become a defining presence in Baltimore with his relentless work ethic and leadership. This season, the tight end has caught 43 passes for 490 yards and seven touchdowns after his 2023 campaign that was cut short due to an ankle injury.

Lewis is confident the contributions Andrews has made on and off the field ensure his legacy in Baltimore.

“It’s a lot of guys that step foot in that building and it’s a lot of guys that have left their mark,” Lewis said. “He’s one of those guys that is going to leave his mark in Baltimore. He’s a prime example of play like a Raven and [be] what the Ravens need and everything else.”

It’s no surprise that the Ravens have gotten a lot of quality performances from a variety of players, including Andrews. Lewis says the team has continued to thrive on its depth and versatility and is confident they can get better in the postseason.

“You’ve got a lot of weapons over there — Mark Andrews, [Isaiah] Likely, Zay Flowers, they’re delivering, man,” Lewis said. “I figure you have so many weapons it’s like who do you give the ball to and how do we distribute this thing? It’s exciting to see Derrick Henry run the ball and get that attention. He’s gotten me a lot of attention, too, just with everything else so I do appreciate that.”
