Towson Men’s Basketball HC Pat Skerry Hopeful Tyler Tejada Will Be Back Soon

Towson men’s basketball leading scorer Tyler Tejada missed the Tigers’ 82-50 win against Hampton on Jan. 31 due to a calf issue, but head coach Pat Skerry is hoping Tejada will be back shortly.

Tejada briefly exited Towson’s 82-73 loss to UNC Wilmington on Jan. 29 due to what appeared to be lower-body cramping, but he was able to finish the game. However, Tejada was struggling with his calf in the hours ahead of Towson’s 2 p.m. tip against Hampton on Jan. 31.

The Tigers (13-11 overall, 5-6 CAA) have the day off on Feb. 1 before getting back to work for their next game, a contest at Hofstra on Feb. 7. Skerry is hopeful Tejada will be ready to go after the off day.

“I just think it’s tight,” Skerry said. “I’m no doctor. If he’s not [ready], we have other guys that can play and there’ll be no excuses. We’ll strap it up and try to figure it out.”

Tejada, the 2024-25 CAA Player of the Year, is averaging 16.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists for the Tigers this season. With the 6-foot-9, 230-pound wing out of Teaneck, N.J., not in the starting lineup against Hampton, redshirt junior guard Dylan Williamson was asked to step up and run the show.

Williamson responded with his best performance of the season: 29 points on 11 of 20 shooting from the field (and 5 of 8 from 3-point range) along with seven assists and no turnovers. Skerry told Williamson prior to the game that he was giving him the keys to the car.

“I said, ‘I don’t know what the tire pressure is, the roads are a little slick and we haven’t changed the oil in awhile, but it’s not a drag race. You’ve got to get us from Point A to Point B,'” Skerry said. “When he does that, we’ve got a chance to have the type of season that we all want.”
