Maryland’s Jalen Smith Named Sporting News All-American

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland sophomore forward Jalen Smith has been named a Sporting News Third Team All-American, announced March 11.

It marks the second consecutive season Maryland has had a Sporting News All-American, as Bruno Fernando was named to the honorable mention team in 2018-19.

Smith’s all-american nod comes on the heels of a bevy of other awards for the Baltimore native, including being named First Team All-Big Ten and All-Defensive Big Ten March 9.

Smith is also a top-5 finalist for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award and a top-10 semifinalist for the Citizen Naismith Player of the Year Award.

The super sophomore has tallied 21 double-doubles on the season, including 13 in his last 14 games. The mark ranks third nationally and stands as the fourth-most in Maryland single-season history.

Smith also ranks second in the Big Ten in rebounds (10.5/g) and blocked shot (2.4/g), in addition to ranking fourth in field-goal percentage (.538).

Smith and the Terrapins return to action March 13 in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals. The game will tip at approximately 9 p.m. on Big Ten Network and the Terps’ opponent has yet to be determined.
