Dr. Jessie Folk
Dr. Jessie Folk, who played volleyball at UMBC before graduating in 2007, is a full-time attending physician with the NorthShore University Health System, which includes five hospitals just north of Chicago.
She had a baby in January and returned to work in April, when the first wave of coronavirus infections was hitting the nation hard. She has treated COVID patients in emergency departments at four NorthShore locations; patients range from mildly symptomatic to seriously ill.
Visitor restrictions mean patients can’t lean on loved ones the way they normally do, and the impact of that is not lost on Folk.
“Personally, you just have to take those extra moments and appreciate what we have — love and respect our families, love and respect our neighbors and other people who have been going through things like this and … just trying to do your best for the people around you,” she said in November. “Some of the stuff we would have, I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.”
