In September, former Orioles infielder Hanser Alberto was nominated for the 2020 Roberto Clemente Award for his off-field work.
Before the 2020 season began, with COVID-19 wreaking havoc on his hometown of San Francisco de Macorís in the Dominican Republic, Alberto distributed essentials to 500-plus families in need.
He also recorded public health announcements for the Maryland Department of Health in English and Spanish.
“It was very important because I like to work in the community, so I’m always able to do stuff to help them, to show them that we are with them in this pandemic,” Alberto told reporters in September. “It means a lot. Besides baseball players, we are human. We’ve got feelings. All we want is the best for the people, not just in my country but around the world, here in Baltimore.”
