Tressie Windsor, who was a goalie for the Salisbury field hockey team before graduating in 2018, is now a critical-care nurse at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury.
As the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated in the spring, the hospital converted its basement into a negative-pressure critical-care COVID-19 unit. Windsor remembered one April night in particular as one of the most difficult shifts she’s ever worked.
“Usually in critical care, we have a 2-to-1 patient ratio, but this particular night we just were overwhelmed with critically-ill COVID patients all on a ventilator or just really, really, really sick,” Windsor said in November. “We actually had 5-to-1 ratios — we had like five patients all lined up to one critical-care nurse. We had multiple cardiac arrests that night, so we were all running all down there together with an overwhelming workload. But we got it done.”
