Two Maryland casinos are planning to launch their new sports betting operations this week in back-to-back opening ceremonies featuring professional athletes, local officials and the first legal sports bets in the state.

Of course, that’s all pending final approval from the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission. The group will oversee controlled demonstrations at each of the five casinos that were awarded sports wagering licenses last month, before giving the final go-ahead.

In anticipation of the final step of the vetting process, Live Casino & Hotel in Hanover and Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore have teed up ribbon-cutting events to launch their sportsbooks Friday, Dec. 10. Live Casino will open its FanDuel Sportsbook at 9:30 a.m. — potentially making it the first sportsbook in Maryland. Horseshoe Casino will follow suit with a ribbon-cutting for its Caesars Sportsbook starting at 1 p.m.
