2021 marks PressBox’s fifth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best Single-Game Performance
If you’re 50 years old, you had gone your entire life without watching an Orioles pitcher throw a complete game no-hitter.
That changed in May, when John Means absolutely overwhelmed the Mariners in Seattle.
As you’ll remember, Means was so good that the only blemish preventing him from a perfect game was … a strikeout! (Pedro Severino dropped a third-inning strike three, allowing Sam Haggerty to reach.)
Even more remarkably, Means threw first-pitch strikes to all but one batter on the day, matching an MLB record.
He more than earned the opportunity to sleep in the next day after what his wife Caroline described as “quite a bit of, maybe, tequila.”
