2021 marks PressBox’s fifth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best Smudging
In August, things didn’t look good for the Orioles. They had lost 19 games in a row and were at real risk of moving within one game of the longest losing streak in franchise and American League history as they prepared to face AL MVP Shohei Ohtani and the Angels.
Needing to cleanse themselves from negative energy, Trey Mancini and Austin Wynns turned to burning sage in the clubhouse. And the dugout. And by the manager’s office. And literally on the field.
They would win the game that night by a final score of 10-6.
