COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women’s basketball team will host defending national champion South Carolina and UConn in non-conference matchups at the XFINITY Center in the 2022-23 season.

The 2022 matchups are the first in home-and-home series the University of Maryland has agreed to with both the University of South Carolina and the University of Connecticut. The Terrapins will make return trips to Columbia and Storrs in the 2023-24 season.

Game dates, times and television information will be available at a later date.

“We absolutely LOVE playing the best competition year-in and year -out,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “These two opponents have always been huge matchups that our fans really enjoy. It’s even more exciting knowing that we have the defending national champions coming into our building. We have one of the best home courts in the nation and we can’t wait to have our fans come out and cheer on our special team in XFINITY.”

The Terrapins and the Gamecocks have met five times, including four of the last five seasons. This past year, Maryland fell just short at No. 1 South Carolina, 66-59, on Dec. 12.

Maryland and Connecticut have met seven times previously, with all seven matchups taking place since 2012. In the last matchup at the XFINITY Center, they met in front of a sold-out crowd of 17,950 on Dec. 29, 2016. UConn took the matchup, 87-81.

Maryland returns All-Big Ten honoree and 2021 Big Ten tournament MVP, Diamond Miller, as well as Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year Shyanne Sellers.

Two-time National Coach of the Year Brenda Frese will bring in eight new players next season, including AP Honorable Mention All-American honoree Abby Meyers (Princeton), All-SEC transfer Lavender Briggs (Florida), All-AAC transfer Elisa Pinzan (USF) and All-CAA transfer Allie Kubek (Towson). Earlier this spring, Frese also signed two top-55 incoming freshmen in Gia Cooke and Brianna McDaniel. Incoming freshman Ava Sciolla and Mila Reynolds signed with Maryland in November, giving the Terrapins a top 10 recruiting class for the 15th time under Frese.

The Terrapins’ full non-conference slate will be announced at a later date, which includes a road game at Baylor. Season tickets are now on sale at umterps.com.
