OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens and Lamar Jackson have failed to reach agreement on a contract extension for the franchise quarterback, and they will shelve negotiations until after the season, general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement on Sept. 9.
Jackson had declared earlier this week that “Friday” would be a self-imposed deadline to reach a deal on an extension. He is set to play this year on the fifth-year option exercised by the Ravens and will make $23 million.
In the statement, DeCosta said, “Despite best efforts on both sides, we were unable to reach a contract extension with Lamar Jackson.”
“We greatly appreciate how he has handled this process and we are excited about our team with Lamar Jackson leading the way. We will continue to work toward a long-term contract after the season, but for now, we are looking forward to a successful 2022 campaign.”
The Ravens open the season at the New York Jets on Sept. 11.
UPDATE: Speaking after the team’s workout on Sept. 9, head coach John Harbaugh again reiterated his belief that Jackson is “going to be playing quarterback here for a long time.”
“Those things will work themselves out in the end,” Harbaugh said. “I’m confident in that. I said at the beginning that it will happen when it’s time. … Lamar is playing quarterback, he’s going to playing quarterback here for a long time. He and I talked about it yesterday a little bit, like, ‘Hey, man, let’s go be our best and go focus on football.’ That’s what he’s been doing all along, so I know nothing will change with that.”
