The Orioles officially signed veteran right-hander Kyle Gibson to a one-year deal, giving the club more rotation depth for the 2023 season.

Gibson signed for $10 million, Orioles GM Mike Elias told reporters at the winter meetings in San Diego.

Gibson, who turned 35 in October, has posted an 89-91 record and 4.52 ERA across 10 major league seasons, with all but six of his 267 appearances coming as a starter. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound right-hander recorded a 5.05 ERA in 167.2 innings for the Phillies in 2022, though his peripheral marks were better than his results.

Gibson boasts a career 50.9 percent ground ball rate, making him a good fit for an Orioles infield that features quality defenders like Jorge Mateo and Ramón Urías. Gibson has traditionally leaned on a sinker-slider combo but has frequently mixed in a cutter the past couple of years. He also brings durability to the rotation, having thrown at least 158 innings in each of the past five full seasons.

Gibson was drafted by Minnesota in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft and broke into the majors with the Twins in 2013. He spent 11 years with the organization — seven in the big leagues — before signing a three-year, $28 million deal with the Rangers ahead of the 2020 season. He was traded to the Phillies at the deadline in 2021 and finished out his contract in Philadelphia.

Gibson has posted a 4.13 ERA in six starts (32.2 innings) at Camden Yards, though none of those starts came with the new dimensions. He joins Dean Kremer, Kyle Bradish, Grayson Rodriguez, DL Hall, Tyler Wells and Austin Voth as rotation options in the spring.
