2022 marks PressBox’s sixth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best Atmosphere
Once it was clear that Maryland baseball was going to be good enough to host a regional as part of the NCAA Tournament, discussion turned to the venue itself. Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium, which opened in 1954, only seats 2,500 fans. Would the Terps be shut out of a regional? How about playing at a nearby minor league ballpark? Nope. “The Bob” made for a rowdy environment, particularly during the seventh and deciding game of the regional between Maryland and UConn. The Huskies advanced, but we’re still bitter about that call at first base.
