Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse senior goalie Tim Marcille recently chatted with PressBox about his love for cooking, his favorite spots to eat in Baltimore and more. The 5-foot-7, 160-pound goalie has posted an 11.35 goals-against average and .519 save percentage in 13 starts for the Blue Jays, who are 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten.
PressBox: What would you be doing if you weren’t a lacrosse player?
Tim Marcille: I’d probably have more time to myself, so I’d probably be working more. I’ve worked in a lot of restaurants and kitchens, so I’d probably be a chef somewhere or bartending somewhere or something like that.
PB: Do you still love cooking?
TM: I love it. I try to do it as much I can here in Baltimore when we’re not too busy with practice, but during the summers I work in a restaurant and bartend and cook [in Cape Cod].
PB: What’s the best dish you make?
TM: I love slow cooking and braising stuff, so probably like a braised short rib and polenta and broccoli and veggies. That’s always good. I’m pretty good with most pasta dishes. I’m a pretty good grill master, too, so I don’t know. I like a lot of things. I like cooking over an open fire or slow cooking and braising.
PB: What’s your favorite spot to eat in Baltimore?
TM: I don’t know if I can give you one spot. I love food. Thai Street is in the Broadway Market down in Fells, so that’s if I want to drive down there with a few guys. And then over in Hampden, there’s a bunch of places like Ekiben, which is this Asian fusion place, [and] Souvlaki, which is this Greek place. There are a couple good Jamaican jerk spots around campus that I try to get to.
PB: What’s your favorite guilty food?
TM: I was born in Atlanta, Georgia. My favorite guilty food’s definitely got to be Southern soul food, so like fried chicken, mac and cheese, shrimp and grits, everything heavy and Southern, a whole bunch of butter, biscuits.
PB: What’s your favorite pregame meal or snack?
TM: I have a crunchy peanut butter sandwich on cinnamon raisin bread with honey and a banana.
PB: What’s a bucket-list place you’ve never been?
TM: Probably Brazil. I’ve always wanted to get down to South America. I really want to see the Patagonia [region] and explore the Andes and Chile, but if I had to go somewhere to visit, it’d be Brazil.
PB: Who was your favorite sports star growing up?
TM: Probably Tim Thomas, the goalie for the Boston Bruins back in the 2000s, early 2010s. I loved his play style. I’m a huge Bruins fan. He was just awesome to watch, especially when they won the Cup.
PB: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
TM: “Dances with Wolves”
