Whipsnakes goalie Brian Phipps recently chatted with PressBox about his favorite sports star growing up, his advice for young goalies and more. The Annapolis native played for Maryland from 2007-2010, posting a .586 save percentage and 7.56 goals-against average in 58 games. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound goalie now plays in Premier Lacrosse League. He is also the head coach of the Archbishop Spalding boys’ lacrosse team.
PressBox: What is your favorite guilty food?
Brian Phipps: It’d probably be chicken wings, buffalo wings. Dock Street Bar & Grill in Annapolis has quad wings, which are buffalo, Old Bay, barbeque and garlic parm all mixed together.
PB: What is a bucket-list place you’ve never been?
BP: I’d probably say the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
PB: What is your favorite pregame meal or snack?
BP: In college [at Maryland], I’d always have a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup before every game. That’s kind of stopped at the pro level.
PB: Who was your favorite sports star when you were a kid?
BP: Growing up, I was a big Juan Dixon fan.
PB: What is your favorite movie of all time?
BP: “Tommy Boy”
PB: If you could trade places with any movie or TV character, who would it be?
BP: You could say Bruce Wayne from the Batman movies.
PB: What is your go-to karaoke song?
BP: I would say Queen, “Don’t Stop Me Now.”
PB: What is your favorite place to play in the PLL?
BP: [TCO Stadium], the Vikings’ practice facility.
PB: What goalie did you enjoy watching growing up?
BP: Kip Turner
PB: What advice do you have for young goalies?
BP: The most important shot is the next one. Don’t worry about what happened prior.
