OWINGS MILLS, MD. — The Ravens have filled 15 of the 16 spots on their practice squad with players they released in the final cutdown. Like all teams, the Ravens had to wait until the waiver process was completed with released players before they could begin to form the practice squad.
The Ravens added no one via waivers and lost one player, fifth-round rookie cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly, who was claimed by the Seattle Seahawks.
After the team’s practice Aug. 30, head coach John Harbaugh said he had hoped to keep Kelly on the practice squad, but added, “It’s hard to bat a thousand.”
Harbaugh said injuries in the secondary forced the Ravens to sign more veteran cornerbacks, such as Arthur Maulet and Ronald Darby, and that “squeezed” the chances for a developmental corner such as Kelly.
“He was very happy here,” Harbaugh added, “but what an opportunity for him to go to Seattle and be on the 53 [-man roster]. I texted him. [I’m] really happy for him, and we’ll be pulling for him.”
Among the players re-signed to the practice squad was undrafted rookie tight end Travis Vokolek, who was thought to be among the Ravens’ cuts most likely to generate interest elsewhere, and center Sam Mustipher, the Owings Mills native who was competing with Ben Cleveland for a final offensive line roster spot.
The Ravens also re-signed quarterback Anthony Brown to the practice squad, and Harbaugh suggested that the team might still bring back No. 3 quarterback Josh Johnson, who was let go in the final cutdown. Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley has not practiced since suffering a hamstring injury in the preseason opener Aug. 12. He was once again doing some conditioning work on a side field during the team’s Aug. 30 practice.
The Ravens are expected to move at least two or three players to injured reserve this week, which could open a spot for Johnson, should the Ravens want to have him available to be Lamar Jackson’s backup in the Week 1 game against Houston on Sept. 10.
Asked about Johnson and the possibility of carrying three quarterbacks, Harbaugh said, “I think you’ll see that unfold here today [or] tomorrow what our plans our going to be. I’ll just leave it at that, but we have thought all that through. Obviously, Josh had a heck of a camp. … We love Josh, and we’ll just let it play out here the next 24 hours or so.”
Here are the players the team has signed back to the practice squad, with one spot still open:
