Have you ever scrolled Twitter/X and wondered what #freegrandma had to do with Maryland football? You’re not alone.
In June, a fan posted a meme of an older woman trapped in a cage (stay with us for a minute) and noted that Grandma would remain there until Archbishop Spalding star quarterback Malik Washington committed to Maryland.
Washington announced his commitment five days later, then responded to the fan by tweeting #freegrandma — which became the rallying cry for fans on social media with each new commitment. Washington officially freed Grandma by signing with Maryland in December.
