Navy football struggled to score points in the four years following the graduation of quarterback Malcolm Perry, leading head coach Brian Newberry to explore new ideas to get the offense going.
Newberry hired former Mercer head coach Drew Cronic as offensive coordinator in January. With the help of his hybrid Wing-T system, Cronic lifted Navy to sixth in scoring offense in the 14-team AAC, helped by a 6-0 start during which the Mids averaged 44.8 points per game.
