When Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed House Bill 1524 into law in May, it wouldn’t be farfetched to say the moment was literally decades in the making.
The law dramatically transforms the horse racing industry in the state, allowing the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority (MTROA) to take over operations of Pimlico and Laurel Park from The Stronach Group and finally paving the way for renovations at Pimlico after the 150th running of the Preakness in 2025.
In May, legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas won his seventh career Preakness when Seize the Grey went wire-to-wire to beat Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan.
