2024 marks PressBox’s eighth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best Unexpected Boost
Considering that the Orioles were hit with season-ending injuries to Kyle Bradish, John Means, Grayson Rodriguez and Tyler Wells, the club needed to find some help from unlikely sources. Enter Albert Suárez, who had mostly pitched in Japan and Korea since throwing 115.2 innings for the Giants from 2016-2017.
Signed to a minor league deal by the Orioles last September, Suárez made a good impression in spring training and was called up in April. The then-34-year-old posted a 3.70 ERA in 133.2 innings, starting 24 games and appearing in relief in eight others. The Orioles don’t win 91 games without him.
