Best Unlikely Ending
A five-game losing streak meant the Orioles badly needed to find a way to beat the Yankees the day before the All-Star break. That didn’t seem likely when the Orioles entered the bottom of the ninth inning down, 5-3, but the Yankees helped out.
Shortstop Anthony Volpe booted a routine ground ball by Ryan Mountcastle, allowing a run to score. And then Alex Verdugo misjudged a can of corn to left field by Cedric Mullins, leading to a 6-5 Orioles win heading into the break. Surely that was the Yankees’ only high-profile defensive collapse of 2024.
