The college basketball offseason brings significant change to almost every roster in the Division I landscape. As part of an offseason series highlighting local men’s hoops squads, PressBox takes a look at what Morgan State men’s basketball has been up to.

Head Coach: Kevin Broadus

Last Season: 14-16 overall, 10-4 MEAC

Returners: Breon Barnett, David Bumpass, Trent Edwards, Manok Lual, Matar Wade

Portal Additions: Darian Grant (Division II Northern Oklahoma-Enid), Trey Pettigrew (Division II Johnson C. Smith), Keith Richard (South Plain College), Oliver Spence (Division II District of Columbia), Ibrahima Traore (Utah)

High School Additions: Anthony Smith (Saint Frances)

Portal Departures: Eugene Alvin (Delaware), Christian Meeks

Out of Eligibility: Elijah Davis, Rob Lawson, Walter Peggs Jr., Alfred Worrell Jr.

Morgan State finished second in the MEAC in 2025-26 but must replace its backcourt production, with Davis, Lawson, Peggs and Worrell having accounted for 67 percent of the team’s scoring. First and foremost, the Bears have to find an answer at point guard with Davis gone.

“Best point guard we’ve had by far since I’ve been here,” Broadus said. “The kid is a basketball aficionado. He knows the game inside and out. He studies the game and he plays the game with a chip on his shoulder. He was the heart and soul of our team.”

Bumpass, Richard and Smith are among the guards with a chance to make an impact in 2026-27. Bumpass came off the bench for the Bears in 2025-26. Richard averaged 10.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists at the junior college level. Smith earned Mark Amatucci Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Baltimore Catholic League in 2025-26.

“I think he contributes from Day 1,” Broadus said of Smith, a 6-foot-1 combo guard. “Tough kid, really tough kid. I like him off the ball for the most part, but he can play on the ball.”

Broadus is also excited about the injection of size with Spence (6-foot-10, 240 pounds) and Traore (6-foot-9, 222 pounds).

“We didn’t have a big this past year that could play inside with his back to the basket, and we think Oliver Spence is that guy,” Broadus said. “We just think [Traore] is a man amongst boys, especially in this league. We think he’ll be really good.”
