Grayson Rodriguez was considered one of the best pitching prospects in baseball for years, but his major league career didn’t get off to a great start.
He allowed 38 runs on 58 hits and 21 walks in his first 45.1 innings (10 starts) before being sent down to Triple-A Norfolk, where he rediscovered his fastball command and largely ditched his cutter.
Rodriguez was called back up in July, posting much improved numbers across his final 13 starts (76.2 innings, 73 strikeouts, 2.58 ERA). His best moment came when he delivered eight shutout innings against the Rays on Sept. 16 with the AL East lead hanging in the balance.
