2024 marks PressBox’s eighth annual Best Of edition celebrating the top people, performances and moments of the year.
Best Grand Slam
With apologies to Jackson Holliday’s Eutaw Street round-tripper, the answer here is obviously Anthony Santander’s game-winning grand slam against the Astros on Aug. 23.
The Orioles had lost five of seven entering the contest and were down, 5-2, in the bottom of the eighth when Santander drove Bryan Abreu’s 98 mph fastball well above the strike zone to the bleachers in right field.
The crowd of 39,578 at Camden Yards exploded, creating the most electric moment of the season. Santander hit 44 home runs in 2024, becoming the eighth switch-hitter to swat 40 homers in a season.
