Two seasons after being named the American League Manager of the Year, Brandon Hyde is out as the Orioles’ skipper, the club announced before Saturday’s game against the Nationals.

This season has been an extreme disappointment so far. Hyde led Baltimore to a 15-28 record to this point in the season, the fourth-worst record in MLB and the team’s worst record through 43 games since 2019, when the club finished 54-108 in Hyde’s first season as manager. The Orioles entered this year with high expectations to return to the postseason and win the organization’s first playoff game since 2014.

Major league field coordinator/catching instructor Tim Cossins was also relieved of his duties. Third base coach Tony Mansolino will take over as interim manager for the rest of the season.

“As head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility,” executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias said in a statement from the Orioles. “Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.”

Hyde had been intertwined with Elias since the pair arrived in Baltimore together ahead of the 2019 season. Hyde navigated managing the Orioles through their tenuis rebuild, eventually reaping the rewards with vast regular-season success the last two seasons. But the dispiriting start to this season and an especially discouraging past two weeks — losses in 10 of the last 12 games — doomed Hyde.

Baltimore will hope Hyde’s firing can provide a spark to a team that desperately needs it.

Hyde was the 10th-longest tenured manager in baseball prior to his dismissal. He finished with the fourth-most wins in Orioles managerial history.
