The NCAA has canceled its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments due to COVID-19, it announced March 12. The NCAA also canceled its other remaining championships this year, including baseball, softball and lacrosse.

In addition, the Big Ten canceled all conference and non-conference games through the end of the spring sports season, so there will be there will be no more Maryland games this school year.

The Maryland men’s and women’s basketball teams were both well-positioned heading into postseason play. The men were projected to earn a No. 3 or 4 seed, while the women were in line for a possible No. 1 seed.

The Maryland men won a share of the Big Ten regular-season title and were the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten tournament, which was canceled March 12. The Maryland women won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament championships.

For the men, senior point guard Anthony Cowan Jr. has played his last game as a Terp. Sophomore center Jalen Smith, who is expected to declare for the NBA Draft, may have played his last game at Maryland as well. Both were first-team All-Big Ten performers this year.

The women have several seniors who have played their last game: guards Kaila Charles, Blair Watson and Sara Vujacic and forward Stephanie Jones. Charles earned first-team All-Big Ten honors the past two years, while Jones was a second-team selection this year. Watson was named to the conference’s all-defensive team.
