Orioles pitching prospect Chayce McDermott recently chatted with PressBox about his favorite “guilty” food, his go-to karaoke song and more. The 6-foot-3, 197-pound right-hander has posted a 4.00 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 83.1 innings (18 appearances, 17 starts). McDermott, 25, was drafted by the Houston Astros out of Ball State in 2021 and was dealt to the Orioles in the three-team trade involving Trey Mancini in 2022.

PressBox: What’s your favorite “guilty” food?
Chayce McDermott: I would have to say chicken wings.

PB: What’s your favorite pregame meal or snack?
CM: Pregame meal I always go with some sort of sub, so either Jimmy John’s or Subway with a bag of chips and a chocolate chip cookie.

PB: Are you a good cook? What’s the best dish you make?
CM: I’m not a good cook, but the best thing I make is probably just steak and mashed potatoes.

PB: Who was your favorite sports star growing up?
CM: Clayton Kershaw was my favorite pitcher growing up. Probably my favorite sports star growing up, I’d have to say either Tom Brady or Reggie Miller.

PB: What would you be if you weren’t a ballplayer?
CM: Probably something involved with sports, probably a sports psychologist. I have a degree in psychology.

PB: What’s your go-to karaoke song?
CM: I’m a horrible singer, so I don’t sing that much. Probably the song that I know the best if I had to sing something would probably be “Sunday Candy” by Chance the Rapper.

PB: Do you have any pets?
CM: have a dog, a 3-year-old Shih Tzu-poodle mix named Mia.

PB: What’s your favorite minor league road city?
CM: Charlotte was pretty cool.

PB: What show have you been binging lately?
CM: I’ve been more into movies lately, but a show I’ve binged recently that I’ve watched probably 30 times now is “How I Met Your Mother.”

PB: What’s your favorite movie you’ve watched of late?
CM: Recently, probably would say “Warrior.”
